Depending on the different skins and pattern components, a mock-up of the design – called a Salpa – is created in a thin cork material for Marks to do her final fine tuning. Concurrently, her additional Italian artisans specializing in the fittings for the Collections meet with Marks in Milan. She reviews her sketches and the Salpa mock-up with them, deciding how the exotic leather must be cut and attached to the particular handbag. Marks then selects each and every skin – produced at the top tanneries in Italy – and personally approves them for each design. At this stage, the Italian artisans in Milan go into production for the first models of the new Collection. Marks again meets with her entire Italian team of artisans to inspect the first model of each new handbag creation – to be shown to her international customers during Fashion/Market Week.
